Birds Crossing Borders

Khadija Baker

Interactive presentation

For refugees and people who seek safety, borders are critical as they are essential to access this feeling. Safety will then shift according to the lived experiences of the past place, especially ones that are violent, and especially for those who have lived it. Borders are less relevant not because they are crossed but because the place is not at the center anymore: it is access to society, and to connect, which allow feelings of certainty that usually come with feelings of belonging. A live performance to tell a story through spoken word of a refugee crossing borders, including participants who will sculpt the artist’s body. As the body will freeze, it is expected to stop the artist’s movement; a symbolic way for participants to witness...

Letter Writing with EMILIA-AMALIA

Zinnia Naqvi (on behalf of Emilia-Amalia collective)

Letter writing workshop

Letter writing has always been a political act: whether affirming admiration for an artist or activist, providing support to friends and colleagues, collectively voicing dissent and demanding change, or responding to world events in the editorial pages, the letter is a form that lends itself to feminist strategies of protest, collaboration, knowledge-sharing and world-building. For this session, as part of Montreal Monochrome VI, we would like to consider letter writing as a way to hold people accountable. In today's contentious climate, we are often compelled to reach out directly to public figures to ensure political change or voice our outrage in regards to discriminatory or unjust policies, bills...

Artist Talk & Meal Shellie Zhang as part of MONTRÉAL MONOCHROME VI: SANCTUARY CITY?

Shellie Zhang is interested in flushing out the realm of possibilities that food can offer for reclaiming culture and space, and resisting white supremacy. She will present her research process on Accent, a three-part project that examines the history of MSG from before it came to the western world, to its antagonization and now subsequent revival. She will use MSG as a metaphor in reflecting on who the authority voices behind ‘ethnic’ foods are and how she sees hope in shifting this narrative through art. She will also highlight artists whose work around food, advocacy and resistance has shaped her optimism.

Shellie Zhang is a multidisciplinary artist based in Toronto/Tkaronto, Canada. She is a recipient of grants...

Making and Unmaking by Chloe Cavis-Haie Roundtable and artistic intervention as part of MONTRÉAL MONOCHROME VI: SANCTUARY CITY?

This colonial settlement is built on the stolen land of Indigenous people and through forced Black labour. There is a non-consensual hyperconsumption of our material and immaterial production. This roundtable and artistic intervention explores the meaning of making for Black people. What would it mean to reclaim the process of making and unmaking for oneself in this context? This event is a closed space for Black people.

Chloe Cavis-Haie is a graphic designer. She is currently working on deconstructing and recognizing the ways in which settler colonialism and anti-Blackness more broadly inform our connection to land and...

#adaywithoutimmigrants organized by the Artists’ Bloc of the Immigrant Workers’ Centre

This panel holds space to discuss strategies for building a mobilization for immigrant justice in the arts. Our discussion is committed to connections between artists and movement building for immigrant power in Montreal. While there is no one single stance to deploy creative action to criticize power, some develop art and organize collectively, others create in the studio, others still spontaneously on the streets. We gather this diversity of experiences to seek out the intersections that can be leveraged in the building of immigrant power. For five years the Artists’ Bloc of the Immigrant Workers Centre has carried creative actions to push campaigns for immigrant rights further into companies, vulnerable labour sectors, and...

This February’s General Assembly will be structured in an open talk-show format, hosted by artist Jordan Arseneault, and featuring members of the board and staff, mulled-wine hot chocolate, and possibly some free prizes under your chairs! articule is a dynamic centre that is constantly in flux, and sometimes this leads to burning questions going unanswered, such as… Why is the articule facade green? What is going on in the basement? Who invented the signature cocktail? What are frogs? (and other more serious questions, of course). We wanted to take this opportunity to solicit...  - Meetings
