articule Members’ Show 2018

Mirror mirror, tell me...

Who is articule? Over the past few years, the members of articule have been reflecting on the practice of art-making as well as on the practice of self-reflection in the context of marginalisation. Discussions on the concept of community, safe spaces, and on self-awareness are necessary for such types of reflection.

In the spirit of initiating an exercise of collective discussion, the theme of articule's 2018 Members' Exhibition will focus on self-reflection as well as a reflection of the others: the members of articule, the community of artists with various practices, and the free agents of the universe… Who are they? What are we? To reach this reflection, the centre’s yearly exhibition is offering its members the opportunity to present an...

Gelare Khoshgozaran  |  04/19/2018 - 19:00

DEAVANAH/دیـــــــــــــــوانـــه remembers an event that occurred in the past, in one language, as it unfolds in the present, in another. The two are only ever consolidated in the state of lunacy, while the deav (demon) in deavanah (lunatic) attests to the right of the alien to bestiality.

Gelare Khoshgozaran is an interdisciplinary artist and writer working across video-installation, performance and writing. Born and raised in Tehran and living in Los Angeles, she envisions the city as an imaginary space between asylum as 'the protection granted to a political refugee' and 'a mental institution.' Her work has been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions at the Queens Museum of Art, Museo Ex-Teresa Arte Actual, Malmö Konsthall, LAXART, Human Resources, and Interstate Projects, among others. Gelare was the...

arrow_rightWinter General Assembly: Ask-us-anything!
02/04/2017 - 14:00

This February’s General Assembly will be structured in an open talk-show format, hosted by artist Jordan Arseneault, and featuring members of the board and staff, mulled-wine hot chocolate, and possibly some free prizes under your chairs! articule is a dynamic centre that is constantly in flux, and sometimes this leads to burning questions going unanswered, such as… Why is the articule facade green? What is going on in the basement? Who invented the signature cocktail? What are frogs? (and other more serious questions, of course). We wanted to take this opportunity to solicit...  - Meetings

01/17/2017 - 19:00

articule’s Movie Nights are a series of film screenings presented by members of the centre as a way to learn about their individual practices and to raise some funds for articule. All are welcome! Following the screening of Gohatto (Taboo), writer Ronald Rose-Antoinette will lead a conversation around the following themes: the rule of loving (and not loving), repetition, rehearsal and betrayal, the production/circulation of desires and the centrifugal dispersal of affection, the law of believing and make believe.  About Gohatto (1999, Nagisa Oshima, dir., 100 min.): At the...  - Movie Night with Ronald Rose-Antoinette | Discussion and Workshops

10/29/2016 - 18:00

For a second consecutive year, articule is pleased to collaborate with Black Radical Imagination by presenting the new iteration of their short film programme. Curators Erin Christovale (Los Angeles) and Amir George (Chicago) have selected four films that tackle issues present in lives within the Diaspora. Always addressing the boundaries and limitations that are historically given to people of colour in the realm of the cinematic, these shorts focus on aesthetics of afrofuturism and afrosurrealism through this context.  Artists: Adebukola Bodunrin, Ezra Claytan Daniels, Michele...  - The Family Night Series | Special projects

10/28/2016 - 18:00

During the summer of 2016, SAVAC hosted a summer long residency, The Lie of the Land with artist Golboo Amani. The residency consisted of two social practice works that focused on breaking down the myths and fallacies of the colonial expansion and development that often shape the relationships settler colonials have to Turtle Island (North America). Through her work, from space intervention to social practice, Amani uses both real and virtual landscapes to intervene in the settler colonial narrative. From this residency she created the game Unsettling Settlers of Catan, which aims to research...  - The Family Night Series | Discussion and Workshops
